Volunteering in Wilmington - Nicole Resendes & Caroline Sulick

Volunteering in Wilmington

The community of Wilmington is unlike any other in the way the people try to be involved with each other, mainly through volunteering.  Wilmington has a lot to offer to people who want to be involved in it, for example Wilmington has an exemplary recreation department.  These programs include recreational sports, camps, and a youth center for kids in Wilmington.  They offer tons of ways to volunteer and ways to give back to the program you were once a part of.   I played soccer as a kid and when I was a freshman I began working with the TOPS soccer program, a program specifically for children with special needs who want to participate in the sport.  I also played field hockey in high school, and when I was a junior I began coaching for the same team I was apart of in middle school.

Wilmington has an annual Easter Egg hunt, that many of its students took part in as kids, and eventually, I and others, took part in setting up this special occasion.  Another way Wilmington allows me to give back to my community is through tutoring other students.  Many of the elementary schools have programs for high schoolers that allows them to go back to their former schools and tutor current students.  I took part in a math tutoring program at the West Intermediate school.   Through all the community projects going on in this small town, it makes a big difference.

In this picture, my friends and I helped to clean up trash around the school in which the soccer program is run on.

The kids in these pictures take part in a Wilmington run summer program. This program helps kids to branch out and be creative! In these pictures they are collecting seashells for an art project.
